How are you doing?

These are undoubtedly strange times we are living in and so many people are struggling. As women’s healthcare advocates, I feel that now, more than ever is the time to share your knowledge with the world…

But…that can only come from a place of your own comfort, so I wanted to share a few ideas and resources with you.

I think it’s one of those urban legends that gets repeated so often it becomes a truism, but the Chinese symbol for danger and opportunity are the same. In the blink of an eye, the world has changed and we must change with it. I think lots of us are looking at our lives and our businesses and figuring out what’s really important and what’s working…or not. I see so many of our community embracing video, telehealth and online coaching, and the barriers are dropping. Although it’s great to give your audience free content during a time of difficulty, I think its also important to show your worth and to continue (or start!) to offer paid for content as well – people value what they pay for, many of you have spent time, effort and money gaining valuable new skills and you do deserve to make a living too!

The first step is deciding what you want your life and business to look like. May I suggest making a cup (or two) of Golden Latte to help with this? Not only is it deliciously pretty, it is full of anti-inflammatory and potentially anti-viral spices…did I mention it is delicious?

Golden Milk

To make two cups…for you or to share (very optional!) I use 2 cups of either organic dairy or your favourite plant based milk. I add one and a half teaspoons of ground turmeric, a couple of twists of black pepper, a quarter teaspoon of ground ginger and a half teaspoon of cinnamon. I like to add a dash of good maple syrup as well, and if you’re using plant milk, you might want to add a little coconut cream or a half teaspoon of coconut milk, as healthy fats make the phytochemicals more bioavailable

While you’re waiting for it to cool, get a blank piece of paper. What do you love about your business (your pre-CoronaVirus business) What do you miss? What are you secretly glad you no longer have to do?

Have you moved to online working yet? Jenny Burrell has put together an amazing blogpost on getting basic equipment together – you have the opportunity to help women live well during this time of uncertainty and provide them with a beacon of calm and normalcy – don’t deny them!

Also – what are you doing for your own stress management? Personally – I have two secret weapons…one obvious, the other probably less so…

When I’m stressed, what calms me down is watching a bunch of procedural crime dramas – Bones, NCIS, Blue Bloods, Castle (don’t judge me!) I find great comfort in knowing that at the end of 45 minutes, the problem will be solved, the culprits will be dealt with and order will be restored (Freud would have a field day right? But he did say the Irish were the only race impervious to psychoanalysis, so…)

Baking Therapy…just for the antioxidants, obvs….

My other go to is baking. I don’t do it very often as I generally prefer cooking – and I’m a subscriber to the pinch of this, dash of that school of cookery…but baking is different. Baking demands that you follow instructions, you measure precisely and the reward will be that everything will turn out great (if only life were like that all the time!) So yesterday, I turned beetroot into chocolate cake (and some hummus, which is my food drug of choice!) There’s something very steadying about measuring, mixing, stirring – slow repetitive movements that when done mindfully can help quiet down the chatter and bring some peace. Bonus – choclate cake at the end! There’s even some scientific evidence to support this – in the 2018 paper ‘Psychosocial Benefits of Cooking Interventions: A Systematic Review’, the authors found that cooking potentially caused an increase in self-esteem and improved psychological well-being; it also appeared to decrease anxiety and agitation in a variety of people, including burn victims and those with dementia. Did I mention the benefits include chocolate cake?

chocolate beetroot deliciousness!

In case cooking or baking isn’t your jam, I’ve put together a guided body scan/ breath meditation which might be useful for you or your clients
